Review: Division Zero: Thrall

Division Zero: Thrall Division Zero: Thrall by Matthew S. Cox
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Finding Happiness?

••• NOT for the Transphobic, Homophobic, or Closedminded •••

As far as I am concerned the books of this series and Virtual Immortality are so closely linked the NEED to be read together!!!

This series must be read in order. The first book is Into The Beneath. The second book is Virtual Immortality. The third book is Division Zero. The fourth book is Loose Ends. The fifth book is Division Zero: Lex De Mortuis. This is the sixth book. I can't wait to read Maestro's Requiem (short) and then Division Zero: Guardian when it releases!

Kirsten *should* be ecstatic... She has her son Evan (hopefully soon to be legally adopted). She has her (ghost) partner and best friend Dorian. She has new friends and even an amazing and rich boyfriend Konstantin. Everything she has ever wanted is right there within her grasp! Why is she so stressed and unsettled? What keeps making her physically ill? It can't possibly just be work after all! So what if she met a Seraphim? Why are Demons and Abyssals influencing people to make 180° decisions? Who is behind it and what do they hope to accomplish? Will anyone ever believe that is what's happening? Why does she keep feeling like her world is unravelling? Can't she just be happy?

***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy dystopian futuristic sci-fi with plenty of intrigue set in a post postapocalyptal world where nothing is as it seems and the paranormal vies with advanced science for control of the world :)

Facing Demons Within And Without

••• Not for the transphobic, homophobic, or closedminded •••

Before starting this series you should read Virtual Immortality because some of the characters are closely linked to this series. This series must be read in order. The first book is Into The Beneath. The second book is Division Zero. The third book is Loose Ends. This is the fifth book. I can't wait to read Division Zero : Thrall!

Kirsten has found a way to bring most of her demons under control. Evan has helped her immeasurably. Their bond grows daily as do her fears of losing him. His presence has given her life meaning, beyond just her job and saving innocents. For the first time she can remember, she has a real family worth protecting. Hopefully all goes well and she will *finally* be able to adopt him and make their family permanent. Having Dorian for a partner has certain advantages... As well as drawbacks. Too bad there is noone else truly like her to partner with! With returned dark souls to deal with from the Abyss, her job is becoming weirder and weirder. How did they escape the Abyss? What are they here for? Are they the things that gave rise to the stories of Demons? Or is there something worse out there she has yet to come across? Can she send them back or destroy them before they accomplish their mission? What will happen if she fails? Can she keep Evan safe?

Being The Hero She Wishes She'd Had

••• Not for the transphobic, homophobic, or closedminded •••

Kirsten finally quit having nightmares about her mother. Maybe it was saving Evan from his own horrible *home* life... Or maybe it was when he taught her to astral project and she confronted the of her mother's abuse. Who knows? Either way she knows she wants to give Evan something she never had, a real Home. Will they let her adopt him? Or even foster him? Or will they say she is just too young? Will he even want to live with her? Or is she just projecting her past hopes and dreams onto a kid that just happens to have a similar background and the same powers? Can she do this? Or will she just fail them both in the end?

••• So far I have only read one story from this Anthology. I will update my review as I read more :) •••

The Variance Court by : Alexia Purdy

Far From Faerie

This seems to be a stand alone story. Hopefully it won't always be :)

Aylin is a nonmagickal girl living within a very magical world. Variance is incredibly dangerous for those without magick so she has never left her home. Her father used to go to town and trade at least once a year but he died. Should she stay safe at home? Or venture forth to find the things she needs? How will she survive without her father? Is she destined to die alone never even meeting anyone new?

Anna is just a normal girl living in the human world and trying to make a better life for herself. She is in college and trying very hard to get good grades... Too bad she just failed her Biochemistry Midterm and it looks like all her hard work has been for nothing! Why does the homeless guy near campus seem to be taking an interest in her? How can he seem to be a handsome well dressed man and a bum at almost the same time? Is she losing her mind? Or is there more to him than meets the eye? What can he possibly want with her?

***This story is suitable for young adult through adult readers who enjoy a bit of whimsy in their modern faerie tales filled with magick and mystery :)

Review: Maestro's Requiem

Maestro's Requiem Maestro's Requiem by Matthew S. Cox
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This series must be read in order. The first book is Virtual Immortality. It is probably best to read Division Zero before reading this as well to avoid any spoilers as there is some character crossover. This is the second book. I hope the author writes more!

Nina is finally getting used to life as both a doll and a Division 9 officer. She is still haunted by her death and the death of her partner Vincent at the hands of the cyborg called The Russian. If only she could destroy him... Maybe then she could finally make peace with the way things are now! Her latest mission is rescuing a group of kids that were bought by a local company from Europe to experiment on. Will they be able to find the kids in time? Or will they be too late?

Prophet of the Badlands Prophet of the Badlands by Matthew S. Cox
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Price Of Innocence?

This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to read Archon's Queen!

Althea is the Prophet. Her eyes glow and she can see in the dark. She cannot truly remember a time she was not owned... Or stolen on a regular basis. Her healing powers make her highly in demand, especially in the Badlands. Her legend keeps her somewhat safe... For the most part. She does not fight and she never runs, but she ends up being caged anyway. Den makes her feel like a real girl. He is neither afraid of her or wants to own her. He is the first person she has cared about since forever. Too bad the rest of the Tribe is pretty much afraid of her and keeps her locked up. She would do anything for Den... Well almost anything! She'd not let him wife her even though they will go through the joining ceremony if his father allows it. What is menacing Den? Can she save him from it? Will she be able to stay with the Tribe? Or will she get stolen again? Why does everyone she love end up getting hurt because of her? Will she ever find peace, acceptance, and a place to belong?

***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy futuristic sci-fi action adventure set in a post postapocalyptic dystopian world rife with mutants and superstitions while paranormal elements fight behind the scenes for control of the people living in the wild untamed areas where technology has gone so wrong and modernity doesn't encroach ;)

The Atheistic Ghost Whisperer?

••• Not for the transphobic, homophobic, or closedminded •••

This series must be read in order. Though this is technically the first book I recommend reading Virtual Immortality first as it is set before this book in the same world and a few of the characters make appearances in here :) The short Into The Beneath can be read before or after this book. I can't wait to read Loose Ends!

Kirsten had a horrible childhood... Especially after she came into her powers. Her mother abused and starved her for being Devil Spawn just because she could not understand or accept that her daughter was Gifted. This left Kirsten an Atheist who helps ghosts crossover or destroys them if they are too dangerous to leave to Fate. Division Zero is not just her job... It is her family! Between her partner Dorian and her best friend Nicole she gets by. Too bad men are either terrified of her powers ... Or just want to use her for sex! It feels like she will never make a meaningful connection with anyone outside of Division Zero... But anything is possible. Right? Now that Dolls are running amuck all over the city, it is up to her to figure out the cause, and put a stop to it! Is it a Psionic controlling the murderous dolls? Or a ghost possessing them? Or a truly gifted hacker? Who would make dolls kill innocent people? Why these dolls in particular? What is the endgame? Can they stop the killing before the whole city panics? Or will their society fall even farther under martial law?

Kirsten is only ten... But her life has been a living Hell since she was six and came into her powers. Four years is a long time to spend being tortured for something you have no control over! Why can't her mother love and accept her as she is? Will she ever be able to suppress her gifts well enough to please her mother? Will her father ever stop running away? Or should she listen to the ghosts and run away before her crazy mother finally ends her?

Fulfilling Her Purpose

This series must be read in order. The first book is Freak Of Nature. This is the second book. I can't wait to read Fatal Abduction!

Katelyn is learning to become the weapon she was created to be while learning to fit in with "normal" people. Who knew having a psychiatrist could be so helpful? She still doesn't get most slang or why people do a lot of the things they do... Like knock on doors before entering when they are expected. What is privacy anyways? She doesn't really have any (not that she cares) so why is it so important? Now if only she could figure out how not to upset Lucas, her life would be almost perfect! He and Quess and her new partner Erik are incredibly important to her. Harrington is like a father and she wants to make him proud. She is almost like a real girl finally! When will she get a mission? Will she be able to pull it off? Will she finally serve a real purpose in this world? Or will she get Erik killed and herself captured or destroyed? Is she ready to risk it all to do some real good in this world again?

Aalyiah is a good girl. She is seventeen and looks after her little brother, believes in God and is waiting to have sex until marriage. She is, for the most part, blissfully happy. She loves her boyfriend Noah and he loves her. She does well in school. Then the unthinkable happens after she gets her brother from basketball practice... A driver asks for directions and then abducts them both. What do the men want with them? How could this happen? What will happen to them now? What good is her faith in the face of true human evil? Can they escape? Or are they doomed to whatever fate their captors intend? How can something like this happen in America of all places? What did they do to deserve this?

Pretending To Not Be A Real Girl

This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to read Fractured Innocence!

Kaitlyn is not sure who she was before she woke up in her room at the secret underground facility she now lives in. Though live is a pretty strong word for someone who is more than half machine and forced to hide any sign of emotion, personality or independent thought from her creators for fear of the last bit of herself being stripped away. Pretending not to be a real person is better than becoming the drone they tried to create her to be! Why does Lucas make her feel so oddly? Can he be trusted? Or is Quess the only human worth her trust? What is going to happen to her? Why did they make her this way? What is her true purpose in this form?

Lucas feels like he is going crazy. No woman has ever made him feel the way Kaitlyn does... Ever. Not even close! And she is not even human. They turned her into a machine without emotion... Every upgrade taking away more of what made her... Well her. Could he be wrong? Can she possibly still be in there? Or is he just sick and twisted on top of going to Hell for his part in this experiment? How could they do this to a beautiful teenage girl? What will the ultimate consequences be?

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Truth Will NOT Set You Free...

This series must be read in order. The first book is Fatal Fugue. This is the second book. I can't wait to read the next one!

Alejandro told Haley NOT to trust Jay... Maybe she should really be taking that seriously. He doesn't seem like he is a nice person... Not that she was one either. With the Saudis looking for her and the "shipment" she now wouldn't produce, even IF she could, what choice does she have really? Alejandro has a family to look after... Though for some reason she truly trusts him, maybe even loves? him, it wouldn't be fair to rely on him more than she already has. All she knows, for sure, is that she has plenty of sins to answer for, even if she doesn't remember them. Can she stay safe? Will Jay do something unspeakable to her? Will she be able to change, now that she has no real memory? Or is she doomed to repeat the past? Will she even have a chance to try? Or will she pay for her past sins with her life?

Sasha is bound and determined to get revenge. Both on her "husband" and Madame H. Sure she was a whore in Mexico... But that was HER choice! Nothing from that past can even bold a candle to the indignities she has been forced to endure here, in America, as an unpaid sex slave. Will she be avenged? Or will she get caught before she finds her targets? How can she move on with her life when the people who did this to her still exist?

***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy the darkest of romantic suspense thrillers where deception and manipulation rule, filled with chilling revelations and uncertainty as the antiheroine struggles to make sense of everything while fighting to survive long enough to solve the mystery of who and what she was and what she is going to do about it now :)

Virtual Immortality Virtual Immortality by Matthew S. Cox

Shades Of Life & Death

This seems to be a stand alone novel set in the same world as the Division Zero series as well as The Awakened series.

Nina was born to a wealthy and priveledged family. She was expected to marry well and have lots of babies... But she wasn't interested in that at all. She wanted to make a difference and help people... Just not as a patrol officer in Division One! She is afraid all the time... Of getting someone killed. Of getting hurt. Of getting herself killed. Only her partner (and lover) Vincent makes anything about Division One bearable. Being tortured and hazed every day makes her miserable. She knows she is too tiny. Being a Tech in Division Two is her dream and she will not quit before she realizes it! Will she survive long enough to transfer to Division Two now that her promotion seems to be in sight? Will Vincent EVER propose? Will her shallow parents ever get over themselves and accept her and her choices? Or will everything unravel and fall apart now that the end seems to be in sight?

Joey is a Hacker obsessed with the Old West. He almost has to be... Coming from Mars! Everything there had the feeling of the Old West in the wild days before true civilization. Not that he can EVER go back! Besides with his father dead the only thing left on Mars is his evil sister... So no point really. His latest obsession is hunting down Cleopatra (whoever she is) and paying her back for all the crazy evil crap she's done to him for the past six months! She has made his life more miserable than he could have believed was even possible. How does she keep eluding him? Who is she really? Why is he all of a sudden her victim? Will he ever find her? Will he get his revenge?

Set in a superfuturistic dystopian sci-fi world where the police and the military rule and corporations are the root of all evil you would think this story would be hard to believe but the opposite is the case. It sucks you in and keeps you enthralled as all the complex characters interact in their nightmare world that is both surreal and yet super realistic. The intricate plot lines and character relationships weave a breathtaking story that leaves you wanting more. I hope the author decides to make this a series as I am not ready to leave this world yet!

***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy hyperrealistic yet surreal futuristic sci-fi Dystopian realities with a myriad cast of characters that will drag you into their world and refuse to let go... filled with horror and hope as well as plenty of action, adventure, romance, intrigue, suspense, thrills&chills, mystery and more plot twists to keep you on your toes :)

The Unknowing Oracle In Waiting

This series must be read in order. The first eight book are available in a box set called Omega Beginnings Miniseries or separately. The first book is Alessandra. The second book is Mismatch. The third book is Phoibe. The fourth book is Lantos. The fifth book is Theodocia. The sixth book is Niko. The seventh book is Cleon. The eighth boom is Herakles. This is the ninth book. I can't wait to read The Silent Queen!

Alessandra feel a bit adrift. She cannot remember anything at all of her childhood before she was rescued by Herakles. Growing up in an orphanage run by Priests with a bunch of perfect, beautiful Nymphs is no piece of cake. Especially when her guardian is so strict and feels the need to train her for the Apocalypse every freaking weekend! Unless a boy can out run, out fight, and pretty much best her in every way she is not allowed to kiss him... Much less keep him. Why is she being trained in such a manner? Why can't she go past the line of red cord in the forest? What is she being protected from? Hidden from? Will she ever be allowed to have friends? Do normal things? Just be a real girl? What is the big deal? It can't be that bad can it?

If you haven't read the Beginnings series I suggest you take the time to! It explains alot of the back story and the motivations of the main characters. I can't wait for this series to continue! The world is breathtaking and immersive as well as being completely foreign to our own. Imagine if the Greek Gods still ruled the world!

Herakles has finally become himself again... Sort of. When Alessandra touched him all the brainwashing performed at Cleon's insistence dissolved leaving him a broken and conflicted man. He saw a "monster" trying to take off with Alessandra and killed it, taking her to safety. He doesn't deserve to be in the presence of a being as pure and special as her... Especially, as before he became himself, he killed her parents. Maybe she needs him, but his presence will just endanger and taint her... Won't it? Can he ever reconcile the things his Patron made him do as the People's Champion? Will he ever be able to look at his created face and body in the mirror without loathing? Should he stay and protect Alessandra? Or leave her in the care of the Priests to spare her his taint? Will she be better off with him or without him? What do the Gods' wishes matter to him? Can he make up for all the harm he has caused by doing some good? Or should he just end his tortured existence now and spare himself all the agony?

Cleon is (unfortunately) still afraid of his now dead father. You would think that once the sadistic monster dies the panic attacks would stop... Sadly it is not that easy to overcome years of torture and abuse. Why didn't Niko stick to the plan? Is he going to be implicated in the murder of his father? Will he be able to neutralize his siblings or will he be forced to commit Fratricide as well as Patricide? Will he be able to take over his father's position as Vice Magistrate?

Niko can not handle being a father. He hates what loving Theodocia makes him feel. He never thought he truly had a heart... Much less one capable of falling in love with another person! The broken heart alone might kill him. Finally getting a chance to fight for a chance to meet the Patron of the People's Champion seems like a good time and place to unleash all the rage burning inside him. At least if he dies here it will mean something... And send a big fat check to help raise his child. Will he triumph over the other contestants and win the Audience with the Patron? From Stone To Life

This series must be read in order. The first book is Alessandra. This is the second book. I can't wait to read Phoibe!

Once the Crown Prince of Greece, Mismatch now no longer remembers his true name. Being a stone gargoyle for over 4000 year will do that to you! He is still adjusting to being a living being again but he knows there are things that he must do. Warning his descendant, Phoibe, of the Curse, and preventing her unwitting compliance in uttering the Spell that would activate it, is one of his major concerns. The other is protecting the special girl who brought him back to life. Noone is meant to have that kind of power outside of the Gods. Both girls are in imminent danger. Will he get to them both in time? Can he adjust to being alive again? Will he ever purge the stiffness that accompanies being stone for so long? Will the Gods destroy him when they learn of his new existence?

This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to read Mismatch to find out what happens next!

Alessandra has special talents that will cause her trouble but she is too young to understand this. Her parents realize the danger and try to keep her powers hidden. Will anyone realize what Alessandra's powers are? Or will she escape before it is too late? Who or what is she being hidden from?
